Glacier motion estimation using SAR offset-tracking procedures
Two image-to-image patch offset techniques for
estimating feature motion between satellite synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images are discussed. Intensity tracking, based on patch intensity cross-correlation optimization, and coherence tracking, based on patch coherence optimization, are used to estimate the movement of glacier surfaces between two SAR images in both slant-range and azimuth direction. The accuracy and application range of the two methods are examined in the case of the surge of Monacobreen in Northern Svalbard between
1992 and 1996. Offset-tracking procedures of SAR images are an alternative to differential SAR interferometry for the estimation of glacier motion when differential SAR interferometry is limited by loss of coherence, i.e., in the case of rapid and incoherent flow and of large acquisition time intervals between the two SAR images. In addition, an offset-tracking procedure in the azimuth
direction may be combined with differential SAR interferometry in the slant-range direction in order to retrieve a two-dimensional displacement map when SAR data of only one orbit configuration are available
A Measurement of the Cosmic Ray Spectrum and Composition at the Knee
The energy spectrum and primary composition of cosmic rays with energy
between and 3\times10^{16}\unit{eV} have been studied using
the CASA-BLANCA detector. CASA measured the charged particle distribution of
air showers, while BLANCA measured the lateral distribution of Cherenkov light.
The data are interpreted using the predictions of the CORSIKA air shower
simulation coupled with four different hadronic interaction codes.
The differential flux of cosmic rays measured by BLANCA exhibits a knee in
the range of 2--3 PeV with a width of approximately 0.5 decades in primary
energy. The power law indices of the differential flux below and above the knee
are and .
We present our data both as a mean depth of shower maximum and as a mean
nuclear mass. A multi-component fit using four elemental species shows the same
composition trends given by the mean quantities, and also indicates that QGSJET
and VENUS are the preferred hadronic interaction models. We find that an
initially mixed composition turns lighter between 1 and 3 PeV, and then becomes
heavier with increasing energy above 3 PeV.Comment: 25 pages, 10 figures. Submitted to Astroparticle Physic
Dilepton Production at SPS-energy Heavy Ion Collisions
The production of dileptons is studied within a hadronic transport model. We
investigate the sensitivity of the dilepton spectra to the initial
configuration of the hadronic phase in a ultrarelativistic heavy ion collision.
Possible in medium correction due to the modifications of pions and the pion
form factor in a hadronic gas are discussed.Comment: Dedicated to Gerry Brown in honor of the 32nd celebration of his 39th

Banking union in historical perspective: the initiative of the European Commission in the 1960s-1970s
This article shows that planning for the organization of EU banking regulation and supervision did not just appear on the agenda in recent years with discussions over the creation of the eurozone banking union. It unveils a hitherto neglected initiative of the European Commission in the 1960s and early 1970s. Drawing on extensive archival work, this article explains that this initiative, however, rested on a number of different assumptions, and emerged in a much different context. It first explains that the Commission's initial project was not crisis-driven; that it articulated the link between monetary integration and banking regulation; and finally that it did not set out to move the supervisory framework to the supranational level, unlike present-day developments
Multipartite entangled coherent states
We propose a scheme for generating multipartite entangled coherent states via
entanglement swapping, with an example of a physical realization in ion traps.
Bipartite entanglement of these multipartite states is quantified by the
concurrence. We also use the --tangle to compute multipartite entanglement
for certain systems. Finally we establish that these results for entanglement
can be applied to more general multipartite entangled nonorthogonal states.Comment: 7 pages, two figures. We added more detail discussions on the
generation of multipartite entangled coherent states and multipartite

Material-Specific Investigations of Correlated Electron Systems
We present the results of numerical studies for selected materials with
strongly correlated electrons using a combination of the local-density
approximation and dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT). For the solution of the
DMFT equations a continuous-time quantum Monte-Carlo algorithm was employed.
All simulations were performed on the supercomputer HLRB II at the Leibniz
Rechenzentrum in Munich. Specifically we have analyzed the pressure induced
metal-insulator transitions in Fe2O3 and NiS2, the charge susceptibility of the
fluctuating-valence elemental metal Yb, and the spectral properties of a
covalent band-insulator model which includes local electronic correlations.Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures, to appear in "High Performance Computing in

Safety Outcomes and Near-Adult Height Gain of Growth Hormone-Treated Children with SHOX Deficiency: Data from an Observational Study and a Clinical Trial
Background/Aims: To assess auxological and safety data for growth hormone (GH)-Treated children with SHOX deficiency. Methods: Data were examined for GH-Treated SHOX-deficient children (n = 521) from the observational Genetics and Neuroendocrinology of Short Stature International Study (GeNeSIS). For patients with near-Adult height information, GeNeSIS results (n = 90) were compared with a clinical trial (n = 28) of SHOX-deficient patients. Near-Adult height was expressed as standard deviation score (SDS) for chronological age, potentially increasing the observed effect of treatment. Results: Most SHOX-deficient patients in GeNeSIS had diagnoses of Leri-Weill syndrome (n = 292) or non-syndromic short stature (n = 228). For GeNeSIS patients with near-Adult height data, mean age at GH treatment start was 11.0 years, treatment duration 4.4 years, and height SDS gain 0.83 (95% confidence interval 0.49-1.17). Respective ages, GH treatment durations and height SDS gains for GeNeSIS patients prepubertal at baseline (n = 42) were 9.2 years, 6.0 years and 1.19 (0.76-1.62), and for the clinical trial cohort they were 9.2 years, 6.0 years and 1.25 (0.92-1.58). No new GH-related safety concerns were identified. Conclusion: Patients with SHOX deficiency who had started GH treatment before puberty in routine clinical practice had a similar height gain to that of patients in the clinical trial on which approval for the indication was based, with no new safety concerns
The Composition of Cosmic Rays at the Knee
The observation of a small change in spectral slope, or 'knee' in the fluxes
of cosmic rays near energies 10^15 eV has caused much speculation since its
discovery over 40 years ago. The origin of this feature remains unknown. A
small workshop to review some modern experimental measurements of this region
was held at the Adler Planetarium in Chicago, USA in June 2000. This paper
summarizes the results presented at this workshop and the discussion of their
interpretation in the context of hadronic models of atmospheric airshowers.Comment: 36 pages, 10 figure
Equivalence between Bell inequalities and quantum Minority game
We show that, for a continuous set of entangled four-partite states, the task
of maximizing the payoff in the symmetric-strategy four-player quantum Minority
game is equivalent to maximizing the violation of a four-particle Bell
inequality with each observer choosing the same set of two dichotomic
observables. We conclude the existence of direct correspondences between (i)
the payoff rule and Bell inequalities, and (ii) the strategy and the choice of
measured observables in evaluating these Bell inequalities. We also show that
such a correspondence between Bell polynomials (in a single plane) and
four-player, symmetric, binary-choice quantum games is unique to the
four-player quantum Minority game and its "anti-Minority" version. This
indicates that the four-player Minority game not only plays a special role
among quantum games but also in studies of Bell-type quantum nonlocality.Comment: v1 4 pages ReTeX, 2 figures (1 EPS); v2 11 pages LateX, 2 figures,

Dynamic Evolution Model of Isothermal Voids and Shocks
We explore self-similar hydrodynamic evolution of central voids embedded in
an isothermal gas of spherical symmetry under the self-gravity. More
specifically, we study voids expanding at constant radial speeds in an
isothermal gas and construct all types of possible void solutions without or
with shocks in surrounding envelopes. We examine properties of void boundaries
and outer envelopes. Voids without shocks are all bounded by overdense shells
and either inflows or outflows in the outer envelope may occur. These
solutions, referred to as type void solutions, are further
divided into subtypes and
according to their characteristic behaviours across the sonic critical line
(SCL). Void solutions with shocks in envelopes are referred to as type
voids and can have both dense and quasi-smooth edges.
Asymptotically, outflows, breezes, inflows, accretions and static outer
envelopes may all surround such type voids. Both cases of
constant and varying temperatures across isothermal shock fronts are analyzed;
they are referred to as types and
void shock solutions. We apply the `phase net matching procedure' to construct
various self-similar void solutions. We also present analysis on void
generation mechanisms and describe several astrophysical applications. By
including self-gravity, gas pressure and shocks, our isothermal self-similar
void (ISSV) model is adaptable to various astrophysical systems such as
planetary nebulae, hot bubbles and superbubbles in the interstellar medium as
well as supernova remnants.Comment: 24 pages, 13 figuers, accepted by ApS
